It would not hurt to call A. Lange & Söhne a chronograph house. Beyond anything, the Saxon has crafted almost every type of chronograph imaginable; from the Double Split to classic split-seconds, to a self-winding chronograph with vertical clutch, and the classic Datograph. Interestingly, it was not until 2020 that we saw a stand-alone rattrapante from A. Lange & Söhne, for the 175th Anniversary celebrations: the 1815 Rattrapante, presented in a first-ever combination of honeygold case with gilt dial.
It is hard to oversell the 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold. Reference 425.050 surprises on several magnitudes. The honeygold case's tone alone deserves waxing poetic in a standalone post. The cold-warm hue depending on your tilt of the wrist is just magnificent, understated, silent, yet playful. For the dial, A. Lange & Söhne opted for the 1815 style, with direct inspiration from 20th-century split-seconds pocket watches of the brand, complete with vertical registers. The logo rests on the rehaut, and the lovely GLASHÜTTE IN SACHSEN strikes through the center of the dial in appropriate German for the 175th Anniversary.
The gold 1815 printing and chapter ring over the glossy black dial is a first-time application for Lange. The interplay of the printing's tone with honeygold is magnificent, only further enhanced by the black backdrop. The red three-dots at each quarter add further charm, a touch more spice to an otherwise very understated dial.
The 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold houses caliber L101.2, a direct descendant of the perpetual calendar variant from 2013. Compared to the Datograph or Double Split, the movement side may lack some of the layered depth those two offer, yet it brings tremendous visual comfort alongside another first for Lange: A frosted plate finish. As a split-seconds Lange, the 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold measures 41.2 x 12.6 mm just brilliant.
