Langematik "Wellendorff" — 358.032

The Langematik came from Helmut Geyer, one of the first engineers at the reborn A. Lange & Söhne, who developed its automatic caliber almost on the side while he was busy working on the Lange 1. Günter Blümlein noticed what he was building and pushed him to refine it further. The result launched in 1997 as the Langematik, built around the Sax-0-Mat, the brand's first modern self-winding movement and still, in my opinion, the finest automatic caliber Lange has ever made.

This is reference 358.032, the pink gold, silver dial Langematik Big Date on a Wellendorff bracelet. The base reference, 308.032, has been in the catalogue for a mere 5 to 6 years. The Wellendorff variant however, despite being offered from 1997 to 2006, has production numbers in very low two-digits. As you might know from the sale of the Langematik set, some combinations exist in numbers as low as four pieces, and several barely turn up in a search at all. New Old Stock examples like this one, complete with box, papers and hangtag, are close to as good as this reference gets. One of the most exciting finds I have ever encountered.

Pink gold Langematiks skip the brushed and polished contrast found on the rest of the line and run fully polished instead, a small but distinct detail. The case measures a compact 37 x 9.7mm, built in Lange's three-step construction with the welded, angular lugs that mark every piece from this era. The dial follows a strict vertical axis: the gold-framed outsize date sits at 12, the oversized sub-seconds balances it at 6, and double batons at 3 and 9 form a subtle crosshair through the center. Luminescent hands and railroad-track pips are a rare sporty touch for a brand this classical, and the curved "Sax-0-Mat" text along the sub-seconds register deliberately breaks the symmetry.

Inside is the caliber L921.4, the big date execution of the Sax-0-Mat. Rather than simply mounting a rotor on top of the movement, Lange integrated a three-quarter sized rotor directly into the three-quarter plate itself, something no one else had attempted at this scale. The rotor assembly alone uses eight separate fasteners between the platinum centrifugal mass and the rotor shaft, and the winding train runs through a bidirectional Inversor mounted on an actual ball bearing rather than a jewel. It measures 30.4mm, beats at 3Hz, and delivers 46 hours of power reserve. Pulling the crown stops the balance and snaps the seconds hand instantly back to zero, a patented mechanism that also avoids the stutter most hacking movements show when the crown is pushed back in.

This example is New Old Stock and comes complete with its original box, papers and hangtag. Sold at The Selection, at Langepedia.com in September 2026.
